Willard Hein
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 29, at Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene for Willard Carl Hein of Eugene, who died May 20 of age-related causes. He was 93.
He was born April 5, 1916, in Chicago to Henry and Dora Brammann Hein.
Hein married Florence Briese in May 1941 in Chicago.
Hein engineered a part that facilitated completion of the Manhattan Project during World War II. He worked for the Crane Co. in Chicago from 1935 to 1946, then owned and operated Lou and Ev's Cafe in the Eugene area from 1946 to 1991.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Alan of Eugene; a daughter, Laurie Herbig of Florence; a sister, Dorothy Wiegel of Chicago; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Family Tribute
Willard Carl Hein passed away, with his family at his side, after a short illness on May 20, 2009. He was born April 5, 1916 to Henry and Dora (Brammann) Hein in Chicago, Illinois. In his 93 years, Will was blessed with good health up until his final illness.
Willard was raised with two sisters in Chicago, IL through Prohibition and the Great Depression. He was a graduate of Schurz High School in Chicago, IL. He spent his summers working on the Illinois farm of his grandparents. Willard has a warm, close family and a happy childhood.
Willard met and married Florence Briese in Chicago in May of 1941 at Mount Olive Lutheran Church. He was a devoted husband. A reverence for and love of good food was a heritage passed on from Willard's family, and a tradition which he embraced lifelong, both in cooking for others and relishing fine meals. Together, they were the consummate hosts and ran "Lou & Ev's Cafe" with their family from 1946 to 1991. The towering neon rooster on Hwy. 99 north of Eugene drew faithful customers over four decades. It was a nostalgic landmark to many engagements and childhood memories. Years after they retired, loyal customers would recognize them and relate how much they loved dining at Will and Flo's restaurant. Chicken never tasted so good.

He received a commendation from President Roosevelt and the Dept. of War in 1945 for his service to the Manhattan Project for "contributing to the successful conclusion of World War II". Willard could build or fix anything. He built the house in which he and Florence raised their two children and lived in for fifty-eight years.
Willard was a life long member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the Elks for many years, and a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church for 53 years. Willard is survived by his wife of 68 years, Florence (Briese) Hein; his son, Alan Hein and his wife, Carol, of Eugene; daughter, Laurie Herbig and her husband, Kevin of Florence; grandchildren: Jerame Hein of Eugene and Jennifer Hein of Portland; great-grandchildren: Uriah and Flora; sister, Dorothy Wiegel of Chicago; and innumerable nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
Willard was an adoring husband, a devoted father, a great cook for Lou & Ev's Café, and a loving grandfather and great-grandfather whom we were blessed to keep for 93 years.
