Joel was the son of Philip & Elizabeth Zolman (who are buried in Glenda Cemetery on Green Road, Farmington) and the grandson of Adam & Susannah Zollman (Adam buried in Zollman Cemetery in Frederick County, Maryland). Joel married Luisa Murphy on January 13, 1841 in Farmington. They had 13 children:
1) Tabitha Zolman (b. 1841 & died as a child)
2) Marguerite (Margaret) (b. 1843 & md. Alexander Moore)
3) Chester B. (b. 1845 & md. Sarah "Lizzie" Jacobs)
4) Emily Adeline "Addie" (b. 1847 & md. Edward Walsh)
5) Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" (b. 1848 & md. John Gossett)
6) Rachel M. (b. 1850 & md. Edward Perlkins
7) William (b. 1851 & died at birth)
8) John Phillip "JP" (b. 1853 & md. Belle Levering, Addie Hughes & Mary "Mamie" Level)
9) Lucy Jane (b. 1855 & md. James Horn, Robert Martin & John Doss)
