Sarah Elizabeth ("Libbie") was the daughter of John and Amelia Ten Eyck Hover. Libbie's siblings were Henry Hover (1830-1901), Mary C. Hover Adams (1832-1883), Augustus Hover (1834-1907), and John L. Hover (1839-1918).

Libbie was born in Monroe County, NY, but relocated to Dakota County, MN, sometime before Sept 1857. After her death, her husband Melvin Hartwell relocated to Deadwood, SD. Melvin died in the U.S. Soldier's Home in Hot Springs, Fall River County, SD, on May 22, 1908.
