Major League Baseball Player. A native of Dyersburg, Tennessee, the 26 year old, 6' 1", 180 lb right-handed pitcher started his professional baseball career with Indianapolis in 1945 with 10 wins and a no hitter. On July 29, 1945 he started with the Boston Braves where he finished the 1945 season with 8 wins 3 losses. In 1946 he went 12 wins 9 losses with a 3.52 earned run average for the 4th place Braves. He played from 1945 through 1948 with the Boston Braves. He was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in 1949. In 1950 he was traded to the New York Giants then to Philadelphia A's on February 20, 1952, where he finished out his five year career and retired from professional baseball. Appearing in a total of 101 games, his record was 25 wins 16 losses with 93 strike outs and a 4.00 earned run average. Returning to his hometown of Dyersburg, Tennessee upon his retirement, he became involved in coaching boy's baseball. Under his leadership Dyersburg won the Tennessee Connie Mack State Championship in 1964, and finished runner-up in the Southeastern Regional Championship in Columbus, Georgia. He died from cancer on November 19, 1995. His memory lives on as the Dixie Youth Baseball Complex in Dyersburg, Tennessee was named in his honor.
