William emigrated with his parents c. 1847 to Marshaltown, Digby Co, Nova Scotia. He went to sea in his teens and married Sarah Jane Thompson in London in 1869. They settled in Digby Co. where William farmed and later became a bridge tender for the Western County Railroad. William and Sarah Jane moved to Cambridge,MA in 1918 to live with daughter Jennie.
