Son of Joseph and Lattie A Palmo. Husband of Helen Brenzovich and father to Joseph Palmo.

Duane Palmo, 91, of Fredericktown, died Sunday, May 20, 2007.

He was born August 5, 1915, in Tunnelton, a son of Joe Palmo (born Cesidio Palmarini), who immigrated to the U.S. from Pianella, Abruzzo, Italy, and Charlotte Linsenbigler, who counted three Revolutionary war veterans among her Pennsylvania Dutch roots. He was one of nine children.

Like his ancestors, Mr. Palmo served his county during wartime. Drafted before America entered into World War II, he participated in the North African campaign, invasion of Sicily, battle of Monte Cassino, landing at Anzio, invasion of Rome and the Northern Appennines and Po Valley campaigns. He served with several ordnance units, including the 38th, 42nd, Fifth Army and 101st.

A skilled armament machinist, he initiated a battlefield redesign of Howitzer firing pins, setting up a machine shop to manufacture the pins during the battle of Monte Cassino.

Mr. Palmo had a lifelong interest in machines and building. He raced a car at the Indianapolis 500 in the brickyard days, rebuilt motorcycles, but was proudest of building his own home.

After retiring from Homestead Works, he was able to indulge his passion for golf and frequently was found with his friends at Chippewa Golf Club. He will be remembered as a devoted husband and wonderful father.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Helen Brenzovich; a son, Joseph (Joanne Pompeo); and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased are his brothers, Powell, Doyle, Virgil and Vaughn; and sisters Lola Bridgen, Opal Hazlett, Adeline Young and Zola Palmo.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Greenlee Funeral Home, 42 Bank Street at Crawford Road, Fredericktown, where prayers will be said at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 23, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Marcellus Roman Catholic Church, Jefferson, with the Rev. J. Francis Frazer as celebrant. Interment will follow in Greene County Memorial Park.
