Born Thelma Edna Macomber at Hotel Dieu Hospital in Beaumont, Texas December 23,1908, she was the fourth of six children born to Herbert Ira Macomber (Sr.) and Mary Virginia Ford Macomber. All knew her as "Tuny" from the time her next oldest sister, Iris, looked into her crib and said, "Ain't she Tuny!" She was barely 17 when she married John Rodney Wakefield in 1926, and her first child was born in 1927. Altogether, Tuny and Johnny had seven children, beginning with John Rodney (Jr.) and followed by Jean Nell, Richard Dean, Mary Jo, Judith Ann, Clyde Neal and Michael Spencer. Johnny's work as a lineman for Gulf States Utilities took the family from Beaumont to Woodville, then to Silsbee and eventually to Conroe, Texas. Johnny passed away in 1956 at age 48, leaving the three youngest children for Tuny to raise alone. She became a nurse, and in 1962 moved back to Beaumont and bought the old Macomber family home where she was raised. In 1966 Tuny married Arthur Pue Gorman, and shortly thereafter, they retired to a rural home in Vidor, Texas where they enjoyed living their final years gardening and maintaining their home and lawn.
