Our Mrs. Brooks...It is with deep love and profound appreciation that we celebrate the life of our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, endearing friend, and favorite teacher to many. Ruth Ennis Brooks was born October 23, 1923 at home in Eminence, Missouri, the sixth of eight children. After graduating from high school in 1942, she began her teaching experience in a rural school in the DeWeese community, then to "Big Creek School" near Round Springs, and finally a teaching assignment at Clear Creek School near Springfield, Missouri.

Ruth completed a college education at Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar. While in Bolivar, Missouri she met her future husband Bobby Brooks. After getting permission from Ruth's mother, Ruth and Bob left Missouri in August of 1946 with Bob's father driving. They married on August 27, 1946 in Santa Rosa, New Mexico, en route to Oxnard, California. The newlyweds spent their wedding night in the back seat of the car, with the new father-in-law sleeping outside for their privacy.

Ruth and Bob settled in Oxnard, California in 1946 and were some of the earliest Oxnard Beach residents. Ruth promptly began her teaching career as a first grade teacher. Two years later, Ruth transferred to the Hueneme Elementary School District as a primary grade teacher. In 1953, she was promoted to principal of the newly built Hollywood Beach School. The District Superintendent recognized her administrative potential by appointing her to a principal position at Hollywood Beach School. Ruth remained at Hollywood Beach School, serving in roles as principal, reading specialist, and her favorite role being a teacher until her retirement in June of 1989. She truly leaves behind a legacy of being a memorable kindergarten teacher who provided motivation to her students and family members; many of whom went on to become teachers, who modeled themselves after her style. Being a teacher meant so much to her, that in her retirement years, she was often fondly recognized by her former students and room mothers wherever she went.

Over the years, while Ruth was teaching, Bobby co-owned and operated the Brooks Brother's Wagon Wheel Shell Station, and was the owner of the Oxnard Shores Shell Station.

Ruth was a graduate of San Fernando Valley State University in Northridge, California. As a professional educator, she was a life member in the National Education Association and served as their national delegate.

She was an exemplary teacher who received an Honorary Service Award from the Hollywood Beach P.T.A. in 1979. She was also a member of the California Teacher's Association, the Hueneme Administrator's and Teacher's Association, and the California Retired Teacher's Association. She was an active member and past Vice-President in the Phi Alpha Kappa Sorority and chaired several committees that were related to local school activities.

The importance and devotion to family was evidenced by her numerous family gatherings and her annual trips home to Eminence, Missouri. She generously opened her home, heart, and support to several family members, who all expressed their appreciation for her unselfish love. She was considered a second mother by so many.

Until Bobby's recent passing in 2007, they were able to celebrate 60 wondrous years, filled with family, travel, Las Vegas, horseraces, and of course, the infamous cocktail parties. With her blonde hair, contagious laugh, and effervescent presence, she truly was larger than life. She leaves behind a treasure trove of life-lessons, memories, and love.

She was predeceased by her parents, Alvin and Sarah Ennis, brothers Gilbert and Ford, sisters Eva, Mable, Mary Ann and Ruby, and husband of 60 plus years, Bobby. She is survived by her daughter Dena Brooks, grandchildren David Brooks Yasbek and Jessica Lauren Yasbek, brother Shannon Ennis (Dorothy), brother-in-law Elmo Brooks (Marge), nieces and nephews and close friends too numerous to mention.
