They lived far from any other settlers, on the road between New Ulm and Lake Shetek. They operated a stopping off place for travelers on the road. In 1862, the Dakota Indians, who lived on a nearby reservation, were frustrated with their situation for a variety of reasons. On August 18, 1862, they began an uprising against the whites living in the area. Apparently the Browns heard about the uprising, and fled their home, heading for New Ulm.
