John Hanks Alexander was born on January 6, 1864 in Helena Arkansas. He was a son of former slaves, James Milo Alexander and Fannie Miller Alexander.
In 1881 attended Oberlin College in Ohio until he was appointed to the United States Military Academy in May of 1883 - He was the second African American to graduate from West Point. He was 32nd in a class of 64.

Ninth Cavalry at Fort Robinson, Nebraska
Fort Washakie, Wyoming Territory
Fort Duchesne, Utah Territory
In February 1894 he was detailed as a professor of military science and tactics at Wilberforce University.
Camp Alexander in Newport News, Virginia is named in his honor.
