Civil War Confederate Officer. Born at Fort McHenry, Maryland, he received a higher education at what is known today as Mt. St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. At eighteen years of age, this son of Randolph Ridgely of Mexican War renown, entered Confederate service on November 6, 1862. As a Private, he was assigned to Company B, 39th Battalion Virginia Cavalry. The following year, he garnered a 1st lieutenant's commission, and was appointed Aide-de-Camp to Brigadier General John Marshall Jones on October 2, 1863 to take rank from September 3, 1863. As a consequence of this general officer's death during the Battle of the Wilderness (May 5, 1864), Ridgely was without commission. After a brief tenure on the staff of Major General Jubal Early's staff, he was subsequently assigned to the personal staff of Major General Ramseur where he "served with his usual gallantry" as an acting Aide-De-Camp. During the July 20, 1864 Battle of Rutherford's Farm , near Winchester, Virginia, Lieutenant Ridgley received a dangerous wound to his thigh, an injury that crippled him for life. Remaining on the battlefield, he was purportedly aided and comforted by a local Winchester woman named Tillie Russell. He was eventually captured by the Federals, however, regained his freedom when Winchester was retaken by Confederate forces. Unfit for field service, he served out the war as a drill master under the direction of Major General James Lawson Kemper.
