John was nicknamed Golly John, apparently from his habit of using this word to excess in his speech.

Among his 11 children there were 4 daughters who never married, supposedly because one was jilted at the alter, (or betrayed in someway), who were known as the Golly Girls. They ran some kind of small store out of his home, which was still standing until about 30 years ago.
[I have a large picture of John and three of the girls in front of the home.] It was about 3 quarters of a mile down the road from my grandmother's farm, so I must have passed it over a thousand times when I was growing up. My aunts used to tell interesting stories, from when they were children some 90 years ago, about the odd, to them, behavior of the three spinsters who were still living in the house back ca.1910=1935.
