Wayne W. Bayless, Jr., died October 30, 2007, at home following a long illness. He was born February 28, 1925 in Oklahoma, the son of Justice Wayne W. Bayless, State Supreme Court of Oklahoma, and Blanche Dirickson, both of Claremore. He was the grandson of John Melville Bayless, distinguished banker and entrepreneur. He was educated at the Choate School, Wallingford, CT, and Oklahoma University, where he received an Honors Degree in Petroleum Engineering. In 1943, he was called to service in World War II and assigned to the 299th combat engineer battalion, which was the inaugural recipient of the Presidential Unit Citation for their work in the invasion of Normandy. He landed in Normandy during the Allied Invasion and served in the five campaigns of Europe. In 1950, he was recalled to the service and served in Germany two years as a 2nd Lieutenant. In 1952, he joined the Schlumberger Corporation and began his career in New Mexico. In 1954, he was transferred to Venezuela and from then on, he worked internationally until he retired. He lived and worked in many countries on five continents. In 1978, following an assignment in Egypt, he went to London for Dresser Industries as their contract and sales manager for Europe and the Middle East. From there he went to North Africa to manage a joint venture company for Dresser. He was a life member of the American Petroleum Institute and Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He was also a member of the Nomads, and the American Club in countries where he lived. He was a member of the St. Joseph Episcopal Chapel in Salado, TX. He is survived by: his wife of 54 years, Julie, of Salado; son, Wayne. W. Bayless, III of New York, NY; daughters, Natalie Bayless Root and husband, Joseph of Montara, CA, Maureen Bayless Balleza and husband, Walter of Houston, TX, Blanche Bayless Sibbald and husband, Andrew of London, England; and 8 grandchildren, the eldest of whom, Capt. Paul Dubbeling, is serving in Afghanistan. A memorial service was conducted by Rev. Tom Wallace on Saturday, November 3 at St. Joseph's Episcopal Chapel in Salado, following a military burial in Salado Cemetery.
