Peter Pitts was the first settler of the Town of Richmond, with his sons William and Gideon, in 1789. The town was formed in 1796 and was originally called "Pittstown." Capt. Pitts opened the first tavern in the area.

Upon the division of the lands, Capt. Pitts secured 3,000 acres at the foot of Honeoye Lake, embracing the flats and a cleared field which had been the site of an Indian village destroyed by Sullivan's army. Louis Philippe, during his travels in this country, spent a night in the log house of Capt. Pitts; and subsequently the Duke de Liancourt and suite went from Canandaigua to make him a visit.

Capt. Pitts served in Col. Timothy Walker's Massachusetts Regiment and is said to have been at Cambridge when Washington took command.

In 1789, the Pitts family came and settled 3,000 acres at the foot of Honeoye Lake, built the first log house, held the first Christian services in their home, dealt with Indians - both friend and foe, and received Louis Phillipe (later King of France).

The town of Richmond was at one time called Pittstown in honor of Capt. Pitts, but later named Richmond in honor of his wife, Abigail Richmond Pitts, who now lies buried beside Peter.

His body was originally laid in the old pioneer cemetery on the hill above their home, but was later disinterred and reburied in Lakeview Cemetery.
