VERNON C. MARTIN

SULLIVAN -- Vernon C. Martin, 89, Route 4, died at 8:10 a.m. Monday in Mary Sherman Hospital. He was a retired farmer. He was born March 13, 1896, in Sullivan County to Freeman Martin and Harriet Whitlock Martin. His wife, Mae Ransord Martin, died in 1977. Survivors include three daughters, Rose Marie Thompson Sullivan, Marilyn Pirtle, Merom, and Carolyn Hopper, Terre Haute; four sisters, Bernice Patton, Terre Haute, Martha Schaefer, Tampa, Fla., Rene Myers, Denver, Colo., and Veva Nesbbit, Indianapolis; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was a World War I veteran and member of Shelburn American Legion Post 197. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday in Alexander Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard Davis officiating. Burial is in Drake Cemetery, with American Legion military rites. Visitation is after 4 p.m. today.
