Blackmer, 18 year old farmer living in Athol, MA, enlisted August 26, 1862 as a Private in Company B of the MA 27th Infantry Regiment and participated in the Battle at Washington, North Carolina on 18 November 1862, Battle at Goldsboro, North Carolina on 17 December 1862, Battle at Rocky Hoe Creek, North Carolina on 24 March 1863, Battle at Washington, North Carolina on 01 April 1863, Battle at Washington, North Carolina on 03 April 1863, Battle at Washington, North Carolina on 04 April 1863, Battle at Washington, North Carolina on 15 April 1863, Battle at Wise's Forks, North Carolina on 28 April 1863, Battle at Core Creek, North Carolina on 23 May 1863, was promoted to Full Corporal July 15, 1863 and died of smallpox at Norfolk, VA January 28, 1864.
