Herb was born July 24, 1931, in Adams County, ND, the son of Gottlieb and Rose (Beck) Mattis. He was raised and attended school in Hettinger where he graduated. Herb entered the U.S. Army in 1952, and served in Korea where he received the Bronze Service Star. Herb farmed near Hettinger with his brother for over 50 years. He died doing the thing he loved - farming.
He was a lifetime member of the VFW, and also belonged to the American Legion, Elks, and Moose Club. He was particularly proud of his work with the VFW and serving with the VFW Military Honor Guard. Herb was a man of integrity and principle who had a strong work ethic. He took pride in accomplishing a project and in having a job well-done. Herb loved people and took time to visit with folks about their lives. He believed a man's word was worth more than gold.
