PVT Co D 4th Infantry 3RD Division

Son of George B. and Rosa E. Warner

At the age of 21 he registered for the draft on 05 June 1917. Then on 25 June 1918 he left for Ft. Custer whereby he eventually was shipped to England and then France to serve in the U.S. Army. The last letter the family received from him was dated 20 Sept 1918 when he tells them not to worry if they don't hear from him regularly as he will be quite busy....he went on to say: "I have been from home about three months and it seems like six but I have no complaints to make for some of the boys have been over here for a year". He stated that he was glad to be of service to his country and like the people of France.

Prior to his military duty he was a prepatory member of the Aurelius M.E.Church and from letters received by his parents' it is believed that he reaffirmed his desire to follow his Master while in the military.

It was a big - but sad surprise when his parents' received word that he had been killed in action on the field - for like many other parents'- the signing of the Armistice had brought hope that their boy was alive and in no immediate danger.

Note: Information regarding Lester's letter and information about his Christianity, etc..was obtained from an aged typed copy of the original letter.
