Son of Edward E. Janes and Anna A Smith Janes.

Veteran of the Civil War. Enlisted in the Union Army, 21 December 1863 and mustered into Company C, 2nd Conn. Volunteer Heavy Artillery Regiment at New Haven, Conn. He was only 14, so it is assumed he lied about his age in order to enlist. He was discharged 18 August 1865 and mustered out 5 September 1865 at Fort Allen, Virginia.

He married Julie O. (given name unknown) and had one known daughter Jessie. He later moved to New York and filed for his military pension from that state on 18 Feb. 1892. Certificate #1.133.652. His occupation was painter, the occupation of his father and he apprenticed with him.

He was admitted to the Home For Disabled Veterans at Marion, Grant Co., Indiana, 15 Aug. 1914 and was discharged and readmitted several times until 1918, his disabilities being right maguinal hernia, arterio sclerosis and myalgia. In about 1930 he was admitted to the National Home in Los Angeles where he died.

He was described in his medical records as 5'4", fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair. Could read and write, a laborer, Protesant, widower, resident of Bath, New York. His nearest relative was his sister, Georgiana S. (Janes) Baker of New Haven.
