Fredinand's obituary reads as follows: Ferdinand Schaefer, for more than fifty years a resident of this city and community, died at his home, 226 North West street in Carlinville at 7:35 o'clock Sunday morning, January 6. He was in his 72nd year, Mr. Schaefer had been seriously ill for the past four weeks and for several days his condition remained critical.
The subject of the sketch was born July 8, 1863 in Bocum, Germany. When a young man he came to America and when he first arrived in this county he went to work on a farm in Brushy Mound. He followed the occupation of farming for seven years when he moved to this city and engaged in the jewelry business, having learned the trade of watch maker in his native Germany. For forty-three years he conducted the business. Some years ago he took into partnership with him, his son, John Schaefer, and the firm thereafter was known as Fred Schaefer & Son.
He was united in marriage 49 years ago with Miss Paula Calkum, who was a native of his home town in Germany. To their union ten children were born, eight of whom; namely, are living; Fredinand Jr., of Chicago, Mrs. A.J. Pieschel, Mrs. William Reinecke, of St. Louis; Mrs. J.L. Ryan Misses Bertha and Josephine Schaefer, William Schaefer, and John Schaefer, of Carlinville, Mrs. Schaefer died three years ago. Besides the children above named, the deceased is survived by several grandchildren, and a large number of friends.
Mr. Schaefer was a man of quiet demeanor, who was a good business man, a sympathetic neighbor and friend. He was devoted to his family and uppermost in his mind was their welfare and happiness. While Mr. Schaefer was a man who attended strictly to his business of jeweler, there was another side to his character, which was most revealing and pleasing to his friends--he loved the out of doors and at his home on North West street he cultivated one of the most attractive flower gardens is the county seat. He took just pride in this hobby.
The remains were removed to the Reifenberg Funeral Home where they will lie until the time of the funeral which will be held at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning from St. Mary's Catholic church. Interment will be in Old Calvary cemetery.
Funeral services, held Tuesday at 9 a.m. from St. Mary's church were largely attended by neighbors and friends who came to pay their last tribute of respect. The services were in charge of Rev. Father Fannon, the pastor. There were many beautiful flowers and they were cared for by the following: Dorothy Schaefer, Helen Peischel, Eleanor Schaefer, Kathleen Ryan, Pauline Schaefer, Dorothy Drury, Margaret Ryan, and Mrs. Fred Pieschel.
Interment was in Old Calvary cemetery and the following were the pall bearers: Ed G. Westermeier, Walter E. Weiss, Lambert Gillman, John Dunn, Paul and William Kuerschen.
