John E. Schaive, 75, of Springfield, passed away on Monday, May 11, 2009 at Memorial Medical Center.
John was born February 25, 1934 in Springfield, the son of Irene Gates and Moreko Schaive. He is preceded in death by his parents and Uncle Dominic Schaive.

John married Lesa Ermann on January 7, 1978. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his wife, Lesa, three sons, John (wife, Jane), Brad (wife, Melissa), Chad (wife, Sasha); two daughters, Kimberly and Jennifer; his siblings, Jim of Ottawa and Carol Bulleit of Florida. There are nine Schaive grandchildren: Christopher, Kelsey, Casey, Cole, Summer, Sarah, Merrick, Vincent, and Kaylin; niece, Karen Gregorich; nephews, Tom, Lee, and Chris; and two special great nieces, Katie and Holly Gregorich.

John will be missed by his family and friends including adopted daughter and grandson, Shannon and Derek Simmons; his best friend Don Robinson, his loyal and faithful dog, Laci, and a multitude of friends.

John, a Lanphier High School graduate, signed a major league baseball contract with the Chicago White Soxs in 1952. He considered his greatest accomplishments as a major league baseball player to be: running out onto Yankee Stadium, which he considered hallowed ground, and hitting two home runs off of Whitey Ford in the same game.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at Southern View Chapel, 4500 S. 2nd, Springfield with Pastor Gary Gilley.

Following ceremonies, family will receive friends until 8:00 p.m.

Cremation will be accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.

The family kindly requests, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the John Schaive Memorial Fund c/o Bank of Springfield, 3400 W. Wabash Ave., Springfield, IL 62711.
