First child born of German immigrant parents in the Broad Bay Plantation settlement. Some sources state his birth date was in 1753.

He served throughout the American Revolution under George Washington, crossing the Delaware River to Valley Forge, and served in several important battles around Boston.

He lived to be nearly 107 years old on his farm in Waldoboro, Maine. His favorite rocking chair is on view in the Nobleboro Historical Society Museum of Lincoln County.

Photo at left is of him at 103. The original is archived in the Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC, USA, because it is considered the earliest photo ever taken in America. An enlarged copy is now on display at the American Revolutionary War Museum, Old Downtown Philadelphia, PA - opened Summer 2017.
