Margaret Lyford (nee Mayne) married Lawrence Lyford on 4 Dec 1818 in Mitcham, Surrey, England when she was 21 and he was 23. Twenty three years later when she was 36 and husband Lawrence was 39, they emigrated to New Zealand on the 'Mary Ann' which left Deal (extreme East Coast of England, 131km East of London), on 24 Sep 1841 and arrived in Port Nicholson (Wellington) on Sat 29 Jan 1842 at 3pm. It then sailed on Thu 3 Feb at 5.30pm for Port Nelson, arriving on Tue, 8 Feb 1842 at 8.30am.
With them were 8 of their 12 children ..
* their 2nd child William Lyford aged 19 and his new wife of 2 months Ann Grace
* their 5th child Thomas Lyford aged 13
* their 7th child John/James Lyford aged 9
* their 8th child Charles Lyford aged 8
* their 9th child Mary Lyford aged 7
* their 10th child George Lyford aged 5
* their 11th child Absolom Lyford aged 4
* their 12th child Frederick Lyford aged 1 (died at sea)

The children left behind were ..
* their 1st child, Rosa Lyford (1819-1891) who was then aged 22. She married & died in England
* their 3rd child, Frances Lyford, aged 19 if still living
* their 4th child David Lyford, then aged 16. He married in England 8 years after they left & died in NSW in 1906
* their 6th child Elizabeth Lyford, who would have been around 11 or 12. She married & died in England
