Avon G. Phillips, Sr., 89, of North Little Rock, Arkansas, died Wednesday, February 1, 2012. He served in the Navy during WWII, was the former Lonoke County Clerk, and retired from the Arkansas State Land Commission. He was instrumental in starting the Ward Co-op and the Ward Chamber of Commerce. Avon was a member of the Shriners, a Mason, a member of Central Baptist Church, and a board member of Central Arkansas Milk Producers Association. He owned several gas stations in North Little Rock and Little Rock and owned the Magnavox Store in North Park Mall. He was an avid Razorback fan.
Avon is survived by two sons, Junior Phillips (Jeannie) of North Little Rock, Jimmy (Connie) Phillips of North Little Rock; one grandson; three granddaughters; five great-granddaughters; two great-grandsons; one great-great-granddaughter; and two great-great-grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Gibson Phillips.
Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Westbrook Funeral Home, Beebe. Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 7, 2012, at Old Austin Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Arkansas, 10411 W. Markham, Ste. 130, Little Rock, AR 72205-1409.
