Son of Nina Mary Bernette Lavercombe, of Scarborough, Queensland, Australia and the late Nicholas Lavercombe (died 1935), his elder brother Private Anthony Lavercombe died as a POW in 1942, aged 25 when the Italian cargo ship he was being transported on was torpedoed off of the southern coast of Greece, his body was not recovered and he is commemorated at Alamein, Egypt, their only surviving sibling, a sister Suzanne died in 2008 aged 90.
