Elbert is the son of Henry and Elizabeth Woods of Orange County, North Carolina.

Henry enlisted as a Private in Company F (Hertford Greys), 1st North Carolina State Troops on July 15, 1862 at the age of 19. He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg, Maryland on September 17, 1862. He was absent wounded until detailed in hospital as a nurse on April 8, 1863. He was absent detailed through August 1864. Muster rolls report him as present from August through December 1864. He was captured at Dinwiddie Court House, Virginia on April 6, 1865 and confined at Point Lookout yankee prison until released on June 21, 1865.

He was a member of the Webb Camp of the United Confederate Veterans in Durham, North Carolina and served as the Color Bearer.

At some point his remains were moved to the family plot nearby.
