Alvin W. Gerhardt, 97, died June 19, 2004, at his home in Globe. He was born in Tucumcari, N.M., and moved to Globe in 1953.

Gerhardt was one of the first to introduce football to his high school in Tucumcari by becoming a textbook quarterback. He attended the University of New Mexico and graduated from the University of Arizona in 1933 with a degree in mining engineering.

He spent 44 years in the mining industry in five states. He was general superintendent for Jaquay's Mining Company and worked in the engineering department of Cities Service. He and the late Mike Wood conducted an active educational campaign against misinformation concerning chrysotile asbestos and its alleged cancer-causing properties.

Mr. Gerhardt was a member of AIME, a Past Master of White Mountain Masonic Lodge No. 3, and a member of the Gila County Historical Society, He was also a member of the Globe Elks Club, Globe Chamber of Commerce, and a longtime member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Frances Gerhardt of Globe; one son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Jean Gerhardt of Globe; one daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Bill McClintock of California; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral service for Mr. Gerhardt will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, June 24, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Globe. Interment will follow at Mountain Breeze Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Services Globe.
