This obituary appeared in The Friday Republican [Rushville, Indiana], p. 3, col. 3, June 13, 1902:

Mrs. Rebecca Mercer.

Rebecca Paterson [sic] was born in Butler county, Ohio, May 20, 1834, and died June 6, 1902, aged 68 years and 16 days. She was united in marriage to J. R. Mercer, February, 1852. To this union nine children were born, five sons and four daughters, who, together with five sisters, twenty-six grand-children and two great-grand-children survive her. About the year 1875, under the labors of Knowing Shaw, Mrs. Mercer united with the Christian church at Little Flatrock [sic], where she held her membership until removal by letter to Milroy, at which place she was identified with the church until her death.

For six years she had been in poor health, but not until April 20, 1901, had she been helpless; yet during all these years she has borne her suffering with Christian fortitude. During these last years she had lived with her daughter, Mrs. Rose Barton, who has done much toward making her last days pleasant.

Funeral was held in the Milroy Christian church, Sunday, at 10 a.m., conducted by Rev. W. D. Bartle, assisted by Rev. W. F. Folks. Burial at East Hill cemetery, Rushville.

Those present from a distance were Mrs. G. W. Brown and John Farrington of Indianapolis; Mrs. Sarah Armstrong, Mrs. F. Gosnell, Mr. and Mrs. Jos Amos of Rushville; Mr. and Mrs. J. Armstrong of Gings; Mr. and Mrs. Curt Gosnell, of Cambridge City; Al Eusminger and family, of Laurel; J. W. Mercer and family, and D. W. Mercer of New Salem.
