Earl DeWit, 89, of 355 29th Street N.W. passed away Saturday, January 31, 2009 at Heritage Nursing and Rehab after a short illness. Funeral Mass 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Jude Church by Rev. Michael Podhajsky. Hanford Honor Guard will present military honors. Private burial at St. Joseph. A vigil service will be at 4 p.m. today, at Teahen Funeral Home where friends may visit from 4 to 7 p.m. and again after 9 a.m. Wednesday, at the church.

Earl was born to Henry and Myrtle (Richmond) DeWit December 19, 1919 in Pella, IA. He married Ada Andrews of Morse, IA May 18, 1949. They then moved to Cedar Rapids where Earl worked 33 years at Link Belt Speeder.

They have four daughters Mary Van Voltenburg and Sharon DeWit of Cedar Rapids. Joyce (Terry) Dolezal of Toddville and Beth DeWit ( Tony Jefferson) of Peekskill, NY. Four grandchildren, Nathan (Michelle) VanVoltenburg of Marion, Trace (Nakisha Horton) Washington of Altoona, IA, Teresa Dolezal of Hiawatha, and TJ Dolezal (Monica) of Marion. Five great grandchildren Rachel and Stephanie VanVoltenburg, Kyanna Salyars, LaTavia Washington, and Seth McBurney.

Earl served in WWII in the 1st Armored 13th Tank Division in the African, Italian, and European conflicts from 1941-45. He was a member and served as secretary of the Local 299 and Linn County UAW. He was a charter member of St. Jude Church.

Earl enjoyed vacations and leisure time with his family, relatives and many close friends. He liked camping, boating, fishing, playing cards and rock collecting. He was a talented woodworker and made furniture for his family home and gifts for his daughters. Earl gave much of himself in his retirement as a volunteer for over 23 years to many organizations.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, a brother George and sister Bernice.

Earl was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by those who knew him.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Earl's name to Hospice of Mercy in Cedar Rapids or St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN.
