Obituary Published in Iosco County News-Herald from June 10 to June 18, 2013:
Bernice Catherine Oates, age 90, of East Tawas, died suddenly Thursday, June 6, 2013.
Bernice was born December 1, 1922, in River Rouge, the daughter of Albert and Mable (VanHaaren) Shinavier. At 21, she married Robert A. Oates of Tawas City, who preceded her in death on Jan. 5, 1998.
Bernice was a dedicated member of Holy Family Church in East Tawas. She was a member of the Council of Catholic Women in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church Tawas City since the early 1950s and also a member of the choir. Through the church, she participated in the ministries at local nursing homes.
Bernice took great pride in her career as a legal secretary, enjoyed fashion and excelled in bowling in her earlier years. In retirement, Bernice and her husband, Bob, enjoyed their years together in Florida. Bernice was well-known for her love of her dogs and her ability to train many different types of dogs.
Bernice was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Gladys Gayowski, Vina Katterman, Florence Wheeler, Henry, Lawrence, Allried, Floyd, Leo, James and Albert Shinavier. Bernice is survived by sisters-in-law, Rhea Jennings of AuGres, Verna Oates of Tawas City and Margaret Oates of Rochester Hills; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be held Friday, June 28 at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Church in East Tawas. Burial will follow in Immaculate Heart of Mary/Holy Family Cemetery in Tawas City.
