Born in Germany. Son of Bernard "Barney" Hanson and Catharine Alberts. He arrived in the US in 1847. He was a farmer in Iowa after his arrival, moving to Lexington, Dawson County, Nebraska before 1900, where he was a farmer. He married Mary Anna Lane June 28, 1858 near Sperry, Iowa.

Peter and Mary had the following children:

1. Bernard F. "Barney" Hanson who married Eliza A. Miles.

2. Anna Sarah Hanson who married Francis Everett Speck (the father of her children) and Peter Gragon (not clear whom she married first).

3. John Francis Hanson who married Mary E. Cunningham.

4. Katherine "Kate" Hanson who married George Brandenberg

5. Mary Jane "Jennie" Hanson who married Francis Michael Fagot

6. Ellen M. Hanson who married Charles Prasch
