Nancy is the daughter of Elijah & Deborah C. (Warren) Ballenger. She married James Henry Winfrey on December 16, 1860 in Boone County, Missouri.

Obit: OBITUARY OF NANCY EDWARDS WINFREY Mrs. J. H. Winfrey died Friday afternoon, July 17, 5:05, at her home near the Wakenda Baptist Church, of cancer, aged 71 years. Nancy Ballenger was born in Boone county Missouri in October 1843. She was reared in that county and was married to J. H. Winfrey in December 1860. After their marriage, Mr. & Mrs. Winfrey moved to Cedar county Missouri, remaining there several years. They came to Carroll county in 1880 and located near the town of Wakenda, later moving to the neighborhood of the Wakenda Baptist Church, where they were living when she died. For nine years she had been surrering with cancer. Besides her husband she leaves eight children----John R. of Colorado; Mrs. Mary Merrell, I. J. Winfrey, W. F. Winfrey and S. R. Winfrey, all of Carroll county; Rev. E. L. Winfrey of Garden City, Missouri; Mrs. Deborah Shelnutt of Boone county; and N. E. Winfrey of Steelville, Missouri. Funeral services were held at the Wakenda Baptist Church Saturday afternoon at 4:00 P.M. conducted by Rev. L. R. Kenney. Burial in the church yard.
