Jim Hartley's obit in the May 8, 1913 ed. of the Anderson, IN Herald was in the lead column on page 1.

James Hartley, age 55, died of uremic poisoning at his home, 729 West Sixth, at 1:30 o'clock this morning. He is survived by his widow and 11 children, all living at home. They include Josephine, Mary, Ella, Pauline, Eugene, Nobart, Paul, Charles, and three younger children.

The late Mr. Hartley was employed at the power house of the Union Traction Company, when he fell ill two months ago. Mr. Hartley was a volunteer driver for the Anderson fire department, being attached to No. 1 station several years. He was a son of the late Eugene Hartley and always lived in Anderson. He was a brother of Mrs. Mary Moss and Mrs. Ella Ellis.

The May 10 issue reported:

"The funeral of James Hartley, who died Thursday, will be held Sunday at 2 p.m., at the residence, with burial in Maplewood."

Although the one obit says he died of uremic poisoning, his death certificate listed the cause of death as arterio-sclerosis and Bright's disease.
