Raymond M. Barrett, 86, of Seagate Colony, died February 9, 2009. Mr. Barrett was born in Jersey City on September 13, 1922. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Norma Barrett; his brother, James W. Barrett and his wife Mary; and by his grandson, Brett Noren. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth M. (Betty) Barrett; and eight children and their spouses, and fourteen grandchildren, including Mike and Linda Barrett, and their children, Meredith and Kevin Emerson and Wade and Haley Barrett, Kathe Barrett Latham, Peter and Bobbie Barrett, and their children, Danny and Erin, Mark and Cathy Barrett, and their children, Steven and Christopher, Sara and Richard Noren, and their children, Sam and Larisa, Lisa and Mike Beck, and their children, Dionys and Gillenhaal, June and Ray McDaniels and their children Jessie and Wyeth, and Maureen Barrett and Carl Rivkin and their children Shea and Kels. Mr. Barrett graduated from Wardlaw School in Plainfield, NJ and attended Springfield College in Springfield, MA, before transferring to Columbia University in NY, where he received an MS in Education. Mr. Barrett served in the U.S. Marine Corps in WWII. He received flight training at Corpus Christi, TX and Jacksonville, FL where he met and married Betty who was serving in the Navy as a Link Trainer instructor. He was assigned to the Marine Fighter Squadron Hell's Belles in the Pacific War Area and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross with 2 Gold Stars and the Air Medal with 8 Gold Stars, and three campaign medals. After release from active service in WWII he was an educator at Roselle High School in Roselle, NJ but was called back into service during the Korean Conflict when he served as an instructor in the UCMJ at Pensacola, FL. After release from active service, he remained active in flight status in the Marine Corps Reserve, attaining the rank of Lt. Colonel before retiring. He was self employed as a developer and a builder in New Jersey before moving to Virginia Beach in 1974 to continue his career. He developed and built Cardinal Court Club which he and Betty managed until their retirement in 1992. Mr. Barrett's main interests were his family first and foremost, and physical fitness second. He earned thirteen national handball Masters Championships in singles and doubles. A service will be held at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, on Saturday, February 14, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. Burial at the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, VA will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Save the Children, 54 Wilton Road, Westport, CT 06880.
