Ralph D Bird passed away in Bellingham on June 9, 2004. He was the only child born to James G and Nellie (Boyer) Bird in Fargo, ND, July 26, 1918. He graduated Bemidji MN high school and entered the CCC. Ralph married Naomi Bunker in December of 1937, which has lasted 67 years. He served in the Army 82nd Air Born division in 1944. He worked in Darrington, WA for the Forest Service after which his family moved to Whatcom cty and lived in Laurel for 45 years. Ralph worked on the Alcan Highway and was a scout leader 8 years for Laurel Troop 34. He was a Fire Chief for 17 years at Laurel Fire dept, was past master of Laurel Grange and retired from Whatcom Co Rd Dept after 30 years. He had many hobbies - fishing at Ross Lake, square dancing, bowling, golfing, card games, workshop. He was always willing to help anyone, any time. He was preceded in death by both parents and grandson Gary Bird. He is survived by nine children, Dourland (Arlene) Bird,Ferndale, WA; Dale Downs, Custer, WA; Larry (Lee) Bird, Custer, WA; Gloria Hodges, Oscala, FL; Beverly (Dan) Mackner, Ellensburg, WA; Garold (Diana) Bird, Blaine, WA; William (Darlene) Bird, Ferndale, WA; Robert (Peggy) Bird, Sumas, WA; Karen (Bill) Terpsma, Bellingham, WA; 25 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren. Visitation is from 9 to noon, Tuesday, June 15, 2004, Funeral services are to follow at 1 p.m., both at Greenacres Moles funeral home. The family would like to thank the staff at Fairhaven Estates and Bellingham Health Care for all their help and support. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your favorite charity.
