Montreville Gellette came to Canada in 1898. He was a veteran of the Union Army and had fought in the American Civil which ended in 1885 ( as written in book ). Mr. Gellette had walked and ridden horseback from somewhere in Minnesota. At the time he still wore some of the blue uniform, and carried his army sabre at his side. ( book has picture of him standing at attention holding the said sabre ) He was 54 years of age when he squatted on the north side of the Shell River. He found some lime deposits, which were mined and used in the mortar mixture that many people used for plastering and chinking of their log houses. He homesteaded the NE 24-49-4-W3 in December 1900, the same year that part of the family of nine children arrived in the Pleasantville District. Four sons : William, Oscar, Roy, Ernest ; and one daughter, Olive, who became the wife of Frank Lorenz, were accompanied by a cousin, Chester Bennett, as well.
Mr. Gellette returned to the United States a few times over the years. His nephew Chester accompanied him on one of the trips and remained south of the border. Ernest later took up residence in the United States. Montraville passed away in one of the southern States, and was buried there in 1922.
Willie Gelette married Annie Silverthorne; they had five daughters: Myrtle, Evelyn, Marie, Bertha and Ivy; two sons Leonard and James.
Oscar married Sadie Keating; they had one daughter, Bernice, and five sons: Clarence, Lloyd, Alvin, Wilbert and Donald.
Roy married Grace Miller; they had three sons: Graydon, Garry and Glenn, who were twins, and a daughter, Gladys.
Two of Montreville Gellette's grandchildren live in the area. They are Mrs. Neil Keating of Hilldrop, and Alvin Gellette in Shellbrook.
