Robert B. Austin, Pioneer Resident of Benton County, Dies
Vinton, Feb. 12 - Robert B. Austin, one of the pioneer residents of this city and county, died at his home here Monday evening [February 10, 1919], after an illness covering several weeks.
Mr. Austin was born in Scotland [sic, Ireland] and was 75 years of age. He came to America when a boy and settled in Illinois. He came to Benton county about the time of the breaking out of the Civil war and resided on a farm west of town until about eight years ago, when he moved into town. He is survived by his widow and three sons and three daughters, all of whom live here. Funeral services will be held from the family residence Thursday afternoon. In charge of Rev. R. C. Cully of the Presbyterian church and of Cyprus commandery, K. T. No. 37, of which body deceased was a member. The body will be buried in Evergreen cemetery.

Vinton, Iowa, Feb. 13 - Robert B. Austin died at his home here Monday at 7:15 p.m. following an illness of only a few days. Mr. Austin was one of the most prominent men of this community, always energetic and fighting for the betterment of conditions. He was a man of exceptionally strong ideas and ideals and fearless in the expression of what he felt was right.
He was born June 21, 1843, in County Down, Ireland, and is the last of ten children of that family, many of whom made their home in or near Vinton. With his family, Mr. Austin came to the United States and settled in Iowa in Dubuque in 1850; he moved to Benton county in 1869. The greater part of his life was spent on his farm two miles west of Vinton.
Mr. Austin was married in Dubuque Jan. 5, 1871, to Miss Emeryn [seen as Emeline, Ema, Emma, Martha E.] M. Miller and to them six children were born, who with Mrs. Austin, survive. The children are: Mrs. P. McGeehen of Ayrshire, Iowa; Geo. K. Austin of Sheboygah, Wis.; and Mrs. R. M. Turner, Mrs. W. D. Leverich, Hugh and Clyde Austin, all of Vinton.
Mr. Austin was a member of the Presbyterian church and all of the Masonic orders of Vinton. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in the Presbyterian church being conducted by the Rev. H. H. Brownell. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery.

Mr. Austin came to America in the fall of 1850 with his parents, locating first in Dubuque county, Iowa; he was reared and educated in that section and learned the fullest details of farming and stock raising, which he has followed all his life. He left Dubuque county in 1867, made a trip to Idaho and other western states in the gold region, and came to Benton county, Iowa, later in the same year. He has improved three farms in Jackson township, and now operates four hundred acres of fine fertile land. Mr. Austin is a most industrious and progressive farmer, and has met with flattering success. He is a public-spirited citizen, and actively interested in the public welfare. Politically he has always been a Republican. Mr. Austin married in 1871, in Dubuque county.
