WATSON--At her residence, 170 Rawdon Street, on Thursday April 23, 1942, Emily A. Watson, widow of John F. Watson, in her 78th years. Resting at the above address until Sunday, when service takes place at 2 o'clock, with interment in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Her death record, found on Ancestry.ca, states she was born 23 July 1964 and at the time of her death, on the 23 April 1942, she was 77 years. Her parents were stated as John Spicer, born in England and Emily Rayner, born in Ontario. Her residence was 170 Rawdon Street, Brantford, Brant County, Ontario, Canada. The informant of her death was her son Ashley Watson of 195 Park Avenue, Brantford, Brant County, Ontario, Canada. She was buried on the 26 April 1942 at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Brantford, Brant County, Ontario, Canada. Her mother's birthplace was incorrectly stated as Ontario and should be England. However, based on the Tax Assessments for Beverly Township, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada, Emily's mother and her family were residing at this location in 1845. In 1841, the Rayner family were residing at Heydon Parish, Northumberland, England.

Emily Ann Spicer married on the 24th of December 1884 at the age of 19 years, John Fleming Watson, son of David Watson and Margaret Fleming at Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. On the marriage record found on Ancestry.ca, Emily Ann was born in Beverly Township, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada. At the time of her marriage, she was a resident of Dundas, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada. Her parents were stated as Stephen Spicer and Emily Ann Rayner. Her younger sister Elizabeth Spicer, was one of her witnesses as well as Samuel Piett. Both Elizabeth and Samuel were from Hamilton. Emily Ann was a Presbyterian and her husband John Fleming Watson was a Baptist. They were married by licence by Thomas Scouler at Hamilton. Her first son John Alexander Watson was born the 23 November 1885 at Dundas, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada where her husband John Fleming Watson was a farmer. Dr. James McMahon attended the birth. Emily Ann's maiden name was given as Spicer. Her second son and child was born 20 September 1887 in the City of Brantford, Brant County, Ontario, Canada where Emily Ann's husband John Fleming Watson was a Hide Buyer. Dr. Henwood, attended this birth. Her first daughter Margaret Ethel Watson was born on the 17th October 1890 at Brantford, Brant County, Ontario, Canada. Emily Ann's husband was a Tanner in Brantford. Margaret Ethel Watson died 25 November 1893. Another daughter, Nettie Watson, was born 23 February 1895 at Brantford, Brant County, Ontario, Canada. At the time of her birth John Fleming Watson was a Tanner at Brantford and Dr. A. J. Henwood attended her birth. Five years later, on the 16 November 1900, Margaret Ethel Watson was born. She was named in the Scottish tradition after her deceased sister. On the 1 October 1904, Olive Marie Watson, Emily Ann's fourth daughter was born at Brantford, Brant County, Ontario, Canada. Her third son, William Montieth Watson was born 13 September 1906 at Brantford, Brant County, Ontario, Canada. William died at 16 years in the Canal Pond, Brantford, Brant County, Ontario, Canada. He is buried in the same plot as his parents and his first cousin.

She had the following siblings: Elizabeth Ann; William Edward; John; Elizabeth; and Ransford Frances "Rance".

She had two half sisters from her mother's marriage to Thomas Arnold, 19 October 1870 at Thomas Arnold's home in Beverly Township, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada. According to the 1866 Tax Assessment for Beverly Township, Concession 4 Lot 35, Emily Ann Spicer's father was deceased in 1866 because her mother was recorded as a widow. In 1865, Stephen Spicer at 32 years, a labourer was residing on Concession 4 south part of 35. Concession 4 Lot 35, was owned by John Rayner Sr., father of Emily Ann (Rayner) Spicer. Thomas Arnold on the 1869, Tax Assessment resided on Concession 4 Lot 34. This confirms a story told by my father-in-law that Thomas Arnold was a neighbour. Also, he was a family friend who immigrated with the Rayner's from England. Concession 4 Lot 34, originally was in the possession of Thomas Arnold's father James Arnold who was 71 years on the 1852 Tax Assessment.

Emily Ann Spicer, daughter of Stephen Spicer and Emily Ann Rayner was probably born on Concession 4 Lot 35 in Beverly Township, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada. She resided at this location until her mother remarried Thomas Arnold. After the marriage, the Spicer children lived at family members and neighbours in this area, while Emily Ann Rayner raised the children of Thomas Arnold, as was orally stated by Emily Ann Spicer's grandson.

Primary sources have confirmed these relationships as well as the grandsons of Emily Ann Spicer, one of whom is my father-in-law. This was done as a memorial to my husband's great grandmother.

Written and researched by M. Ladd for my husband great grandson of Emily Ann (Spicer).
