US Congressman. Born in Ireland, he immigrated to the United States and enlisted in the United States Army at Boston in 1857. Initially assigned to his regiment in Arizona, he served in the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac throughout the Civil War. After the war he was again ordered to the West, where he took part in several campaigns against hostile Indians. Because of disabilities incurred in the line of service, he retired as a captain in 1868. He settled in Maryland and served in the Maryland house of delegates. Elected as a Republican to Congress, he served a single term, from 1897 to 1899. After leaving Congress, he engaged in agricultural pursuits near Potomac, Maryland.
