Joshua is the son of Gershom and Lydia (Townsend) Fletcher of Westford, Massachusetts. He married Sarah Brown in Plymouth in 1775. Joshua arrived in Plymouth with his father in 1770 and was deacon at the Congregational church from 1794 to 1818. He was a prosperous farmer in that town and in 1802 removed to Bridgewater where he was pastor of the town church until 1822. Joshua was styled as "a man greatly beloved by all who knew him."
