From the research of Find-A-Grave contributor, author, and historian Joseph Carvalho III:

"Organized the local Massachusetts Militia Cavalry Unit called both the "National Horse Guards" also the "Springfield Horse Guards" and served as it's leading officer prior to the Civil War. This militia company was incorporated into the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry as Companies E and F during the Civil War. He was a wealthy businessman as well, owning the important Trask Foundry in Springfield."
