Neomi Vi Alexander, 92, Topeka, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 2, 2011. She was born April 13, 1918 in York County, Nebraska, the daughter to Olen and Edna (Mehringer) Gillan.
She was raised in Concordia, KS., and graduated from Concordia High School. She attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She moved to Compton, Calif., and was employed by the Port of Embarkation, Finance Department. Neomi Vi and Staff Sgt. W. Van Alexander were united in marriage on November 8, 1942 in Wickenburg, AZ by Rev. B. Ross Cleveland at the Presbyterian Church. Vi and Van have been best friends since childhood days in their hometown of Concordia. In 1943, the couple then moved to Oxford, Miss. and then to Louisville, Ky., as Flight Officer Van continued his Army Air Corps glider pilot training. In November, Van headed to Maxton, NC. for additional pilot training and Vi returned to Concordia to await the arrival of their first child.
After WW II they moved to Topeka Kansas. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and served on the Board of Deacons. She was a receptionist for Dr’s. Lawson & Kennedy. As a mother she raised three sons, Roger, Ronald and Robert. In retirement Vi and Van moved to Bella Vista AR in 1980. She lived there twenty-two years taking care of blue birds on the golf courses, playing golf and bridge with friends before returning to Topeka in December 2001.
Vi is survived by sons Roger and wife Char, of Topeka, Ron, of Kansas City, and Robert and wife Laura, of Wakarusa; 5 grandchildren, Yvette, Danielle, Aaron, Brandon and Dalton ; and 6 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; 2 brothers, Glen and Robert; and sister, Shirley.
Internment will be in Benton County Memorial Park, Rogers, Ark.
