Roman Emperor. He was born into a humble family in 321 AD and entered the army as a young man. While serving as a soldier he accompanied the Emperor Julian the Aposate to Antioch, but was exiled to Gaul for his Christian beliefs. He was proclaimed Emperor in 364 AD, and immediately appointed his brother Valens ruler of the Eastern Empire. In 374 AD he signed a treaty with the rebellious tribes of Gaul, and while travelling to Illyricum to deal with an invasion by the Quadi and Sarmatians a year later, died suddenly from a stroke.
