SOUTH BEND - Nathaniel D. Fields, 83, was born September 17, 1925, in Newport, AR. The family shortly thereafter relocated to Harville, MO. It was there that he spent his childhood raised by his mother, Flora, and grandparents, Clora and Lawrence W. Fields. He was the eldest of 10 siblings. At age 20 Nathaniel was inducted in the United States Army where he achieved the rank of sergeant. He served during World War II with distinction from 1945 through 1947. It was during this season that his skills as a mechanic, heavy equipment operator and engineer were honed. These were skills that would serve him well later in his life. In 1950 Nathaniel relocated to South Bend, IN. It was there that he entered what would be a long and rewarding work relationship with Kenneth McIntyre of McIntyre and Jones Construction Company. "Nate," as he was affectionately called, retired in 2003. He was a lifetime member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 150. In the late 1960s he joined New Salem Missionary Baptist Church. He later became Deacon where he served until 2008. In 2008 he joined Great St. John Missionary Baptist Church where he served faithfully until going home on May 8, 2009.

Fields; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He leaves many other family members including nephews, nieces and cousins, and a host of friends, acquaintances and well-wishers.
