David Washinton Pipes served under the command of General Robert E. Lee in the First Corps, Army of Northern Virginia.
He was in the 4th Company Washington Artillery of New Orleans. At the time of his death in 1939 he was one of the last surviving soldiers of the Washington Artillery.

After the War for Southern Independence (aka Civil War), DWP was active in the United Confederate Veterans, Washington Artillery Camp No.15 of New Orleans. He also served for Louisiana in the House of Representatives and the Senate.
