Fred S. Dewey, son of Lonson Dewey and Nancy Dewey, was born in Indiana. He was a first cousin of Admiral George Dewey. Fred served in the Union Army from 1862 to 1868, being discharged with a disability. He attained the rank of Sargent Major.

He worked in Salem, Illinois at the Salem National Bank as a bookkeeper. In 1877 he married Julia Bird Spilman, grand niece of President Zachary Taylor, who used the nickname "Birdie." In 1881, they moved to Florida, becoming pioneers in Central Florida.

They eventually moved to Jacksonville, where Fred worked as a bookkeeper for the T.V. Cashed lumber company. In 1887, they moved further south to Palm Beach, where they built a fine home on the shores of Lake Worth.

Fred S. Dewey was elected as tax assessor for Dade County in 1890 and also served as tax collector. Fred later worked as a land agent for the Florida East Coast Railway, the Boston and Atlantic Land Company and the Lake Worth Land Trust. On September 26, 1898 he and his wife founded the Town of Boynton, Florida. He bought and sold many parcels of land throughout Broward and Palm Beach Counties and his orange grove in Boynton was among the first in South Florida.

In 1910, Fred entered the Mountain Branch Military Hospital in Tennessee, and he was in and out of military hospitals until be passed away at the Old Soldiers Home in Sawtelle, California at the Pacific Branch Hospital.
