Herbert Lasswell Ketterman, M.D. died peacefully at his home on Oct. 3, 2002 after a courageous fight against cancer. He was born in Belvue, KS, Oct. 24, 1926. He grew up in small towns in north central Kansas and spent most of his childhood in Summerfield, Kansas.

After his tour of duty in the Army during World War II, Dr. Ketterman attended Kansas University and graduated in 1951. He then attended KU Medical School and graduated in 1955. After an internship at Bethany Hospital in Kansas City, KS, Dr. Ketteman joined Dr. Howard Clark in their practice of family medicine. He earned the respect of his many patients and loved serving families over several generations. In 1966, Dr. Ketterman led the development of the Hickman Mills Clinic and Professional Park at 112th and Grandview Rd. He and his partners were models in learning the medical needs of their community and fulfilling them with excellence.

In 1967 Dr. Kettemran and Dr. Clark donated an acreage to Kansas City. It is now called Clark-Ketterman Field and has served some 30,000 young people, supplying their athletic recreational needs.

In 1950 Dr. Kettmean married Grace Horst. Together they completed medical training and served their respective patients with great commitment. They had three children and now have four grandsons. They also brought numerous foster children into their homes and raised them as their own. He taught his children to love music, fine art, and literature as well as sports. He collected and enjoyed many beautiful things. His wonderful sense of humor eased the tension of difficult times, especially in the last tedious months of his painful illness.

Dr. Ketterman was a member of Hillcrest Covenant CHurch at 87th & Nall. He was the first church chairman and served in a variety of ways over many years. During his medical school years and beyond, he was an active leader in the Christian Medical Society and served two short missionary terms of service in Central America.

Surviving Dr. Ketterman are his wife, Grace, three children and their spouses, Kathy King and Steve Jackson, Lyndon and Lyn Ketterman, Wendy and David Neihart; and four grandsons, Andrew Simpson and Bryan, Brent, and Braden Neihart. He is also survived by a sister and her husband, Mary and Eldon Wyatt, a brother and his wife, Romney and Cora Ketterman, a foster daughter and her husband, Karen and Eldon Ingraham, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be at D.W. Newcomer's Sons, Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6. The funeral service will be at Hillcrest Covenant Church on Monday at 11 a.m. Burial will be at the Highland Evangelical CHurch near Newton, Ks. The family requests no flowers, but memorial contributions can be made to Hillcrest Covenant Church to benefit Covenant Bible College/Equador, 8801 Nall, Prairie VIllage, Ks. 66207.
