Farming was not the vocation he would have chosen but circumstances forced it upon him. His mother owned a small farm and it provided the livelihood of her family. Alma was encouraged to stay at home and work the farm. Later he devoted all of his time to the farm, which was greatly appreciated by his mother.

His philosophy was that life begins at any time even at seventy-four. Peace and kindness were the words. He enjoyed his temple work and intended to spend much time working for his ancestors and doing charity work. He held a part time job in Salt Lake City and enjoyed coming in contact with many professional men and women.
