Bessie is the daughter of Earl and Bessie (Beck) Patterson. She married Bernard W. Johnson on June 2, 1951 in Niantic, IL. Her daughters: Vicki (Donaldson) and Debbi (Lewis).

Bessie worked for J.J. Swartz for 13 years and Federal Kemper Insurance for 10 years before retiring.
