James W. Cox enlisted in Co. E, 33rd Illinois Infantry Volunteers on Dec. 1, 1861. He re-enlisted on Jan 1, 1864 in Indianapolis, Texas and was promoted to Corporal. He was mustered out on Nov. 20, 1865 at Yazoo City, Mississippi. He was shot in the thigh at Vicksburg on May 22, 1863. After his wife, Martha, died in 1905, James was admitted to the National Military Home for Disabled Volunteers at Danville, Illinois on July 11, 1905. He transferred to the Pacific Branch at Sawtelle, Los Angeles county, California on Oct 7, 1912 where he presumably died on July 9, 1930.
